knowledge of the true nature of things.

Harb al-Kirmānī said in his Questions:

Ahmad ibn Hanbal was asked about the hadith, “Whoever spends more generously on his family on the day of ‘Āshūrā’…” He did not consider it of any worth.

The strongest evidence they have is a report transmitted from Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muntashir, from his father, who said:

“We have heard that whoever spends more generously on his family on the day of ‘Āshūrā’, Allah will grant him abundance throughout the year.”

Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah said, “We have tried this for sixty years and found it to be true.”

Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad was from Kufa, and he did not mention from whom he had heard this or through whom it had reached him. Perhaps the person who said this was one of the people of innovation who hate ‘Alī and his companions and seek to counter the Rāfidah with lies—countering falsehood with falsehood and innovation with innovation.

As for Ibn ‘Uyaynah’s statement, it provides no proof. Allah, glorified be He, blessed him with provision, but nothing about Allah’s granting him that blessing indicates that its cause was spending more generously on the day of ‘Āshūrā’. Allah also granted abundance to those who were the best of creation among the Emigrants and Helpers, yet they did not deliberately single out the day of ‘Āshūrā’ for spending more generously on their families.

This is like the many people who make a vow for some need they wish to have fulfilled. Allah then fulfils their need, and they imagine that the vow was the cause. Yet it has been authentically established
