Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And what Allah and His Messenger have commanded when calamity first strikes is simply patience, seeking Allah’s reward, and affirming that we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. As the Most High says:

“And give glad tidings to the patient.”

“Those who, when calamity strikes them, say, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.’”

“Upon them are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and they are the rightly guided.”

In al-Sahīh, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is reported to have said:

“He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks, tears his collar and utters the cries of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.”

He also said:

“I disavow the woman who wails, shaves her head or tears her clothes in mourning.”

And he said:

“If a woman who wails over the dead does not repent before her death, she will be raised on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of tar and a covering of scabies.”

In al-Musnad, Fātimah bint al-Husayn reports from her father, al-Husayn, that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Whenever a man who has suffered a calamity remembers it—even long afterwards—and says anew, ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return,’ Allah grants him a reward equal to his reward on the day the calamity struck.”

This is part of Allah’s generosity towards the believers. When the calamity that befell al-Husayn or anyone else is remembered long afterwards, the believer should repeat this affirmation, as Allah and His Messenger commanded, so that he may receive a reward equal to that of the afflicted person on the day the calamity struck. And if Allah Most High has commanded patience and seeking His reward in the immediate aftermath
