Shaykh al-Islām was also asked:
Regarding what people do on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ—applying kohl, bathing, applying henna, shaking hands, cooking grains, displaying joy, and other such practices extending into the street—has any authentic hadith concerning this been reported from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), or not? If no authentic hadith has been reported concerning any of this, does practising it constitute an innovation or not? And do the practices of the other group—holding mourning gatherings, grieving, enduring thirst, lamenting, wailing, reciting accounts of the fallen, and tearing the neck openings of their garments—have any basis or not?
He replied:
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. No authentic report concerning any of this has been transmitted from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) or his Companions. Nor did any of the imams of the Muslims regard these practices as recommended, whether the four imams or anyone else. The compilers of the authoritative collections have not transmitted anything concerning this from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), the Companions, or the Successors, whether authentic or weak—neither in the collections of authentic hadith
