is among the best-known signs mentioned in hadith. It has also been reported among its signs that “it is a bright, luminous night.” It is calm, neither intensely hot nor intensely cold. Allah may reveal it to some people in a dream or while awake: a person may see its lights, or see someone telling him, “This is the Night of Decree.” His heart may also be opened to a direct perception through which the matter becomes clear to him. And Allah Most High knows best.
He was asked:
“Which is more virtuous: the Night of Decree or the night on which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made the Night Journey?”
He answered:
The night of the Night Journey is more virtuous for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whereas the Night of Decree is more virtuous for the Muslim community. The special share granted to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the night of the Ascension was more complete than his share in the Nights of Decree. The community’s share in the Night of Decree is more complete than their share in the night of the Ascension, although they have an exceedingly great share in that night too. Yet the distinction, honor, and highest rank conferred that night were granted specifically to the one who was taken on the Night Journey, peace and blessings be upon him.
