Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

I will not eat meat.’

Word of this reached the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, ‘What is the matter with people who say such-and-such? Yet I pray and sleep, fast and break my fast, marry women, and eat meat. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me.’”

The authentic hadith collections also report through several chains:

“‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās had taken to fasting by day, praying by night, and reciting the entire Quran every three days. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade him to do this, saying, ‘Do not do so, for if you do, your eyes will become sunken and your soul will grow weary.’”

That is, the eyes become sunken, and the soul grows weary and bored.

He also told him:

“Your own self has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your visitors have a right over you. So give everyone their due.”

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, thus explained that you have obligations towards yourself, your family, and your visitors. You may not do anything that prevents you from fulfilling these obligatory rights; rather, give everyone their due. Then:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed him to fast three days each month, saying, ‘That is equivalent to fasting every day.’ He also instructed him to recite the Quran once each month. He replied, ‘I am capable of more than that.’ He kept asking to do more until the Prophet said, ‘Then fast one day and refrain from fasting the next, for that is the best way of fasting.’ He replied, ‘I am capable of more
