And when the entire disk has disappeared, darkness appears in the east, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“When night approaches from this direction, day retreats from that direction, and the sun has set, the time has come for the fasting person to break his fast.”
He was asked:
“What if someone eats after the dawn call to prayer during Ramadan?”
He replied:
Praise be to Allah. If the caller gives the call to prayer before dawn—as Bilāl used to do during the Prophet’s lifetime (peace and blessings be upon him), and as callers in Damascus and elsewhere do—there is no harm in eating and drinking for a short time afterward.
If someone is unsure whether dawn has broken, he may eat and drink until it becomes clear that it has. If he later learns that he ate after dawn had broken, there is disagreement over whether he must make up the fast. The stronger view is that he need not make it up. This is the position reliably reported from ‘Umar and adopted by a group
