Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Shaykh al-Islām was asked:

“What does our master say about someone fasting in Ramadan: does he need an intention each day or not?”

He replied:

Anyone who knows that tomorrow is part of Ramadan and wishes to fast that day has already intended to fast, whether or not he expresses that intention verbally. This is the practice of Muslims generally: they all intend to fast.

He was asked about sunset:

“May a fasting person break his fast as soon as the sun sets?”

He replied:

Once the entire disk of the sun has disappeared, the fasting person may break his fast. The intense redness remaining on the horizon has no bearing on this.
