Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Torah, although the words revealed to us are more complete and more eloquent.

For this reason, al-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym said:

“Whoever wishes to read the document of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—whose seal has remained unbroken since his passing, let him read the end of Sūrat al-Anʿām: ‘Say, “Come, I will recite what your Lord has forbidden to you”’—and the following verses.”

He commanded us not to be like those who became divided and differed after clear proofs had come to them. He informed His Messenger that he had nothing to do with those who divided their religion and became sects. He stated that He had placed him upon a prescribed religious way, and commanded him to follow it and not to follow the path of those who do not know.

The Most High said:

“And We have sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires, turning away from the truth that has come to you. To each of you We have prescribed a law and a way.”

“Had Allah willed, He would have made you one community, but He wished to test you through what He has given you. So compete in good deeds. To Allah you will all return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you differed.”

“And judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires. Beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you.”

Thus, He commanded him not to turn away from the truth that had come to him by following their desires, even if that was a law or path prescribed for another prophet. For He appointed a way and a path for every prophet. He warned him lest they tempt him away from some of what Allah had revealed to him. If this applies to what was brought by another prophet’s revealed law, what, then, of something not known to have been brought by any revealed law, but which is instead the way of those who have no Scripture?
