these views, because the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Your fasting is on the day you all fast, your breaking of the fast is on the day you all break the fast, and your sacrifice is on the day you all offer sacrifice.”

Al-Tirmidhī narrated it and graded it sound and singular. Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah also narrated it, mentioning only the breaking of the fast and the sacrifice. Al-Tirmidhī narrated it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, from ʿUthmān ibn Muhammad, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Fasting is on the day you all fast, breaking the fast is on the day you all break the fast, and sacrifice is on the day you all offer sacrifice.”

Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a sound, singular hadith.” He added: “Some scholars explained this hadith as meaning that fasting and breaking the fast are observed with the community and the general body of the people.”

Abū Dāwūd narrated it through another chain. He said: Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; Hammād narrated to us, transmitting the report of Ayyūb, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Abū Hurayrah, who mentioned the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in the report, with the words:

“Your breaking of the fast is on the day you all break the fast, and your sacrifice is on the day you all offer sacrifice. All of ʿArafah is a place for standing, all of Minā is a place for sacrifice, every mountain pass of Mecca is a place for sacrifice, and all of Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) is a place for standing.”

Moreover, if he alone saw the crescent marking the sacrifice, it would not thereby become publicly known. The term hilāl (crescent) denotes that which is publicly announced. Allah has made the crescent a means of determining times for people and for Hajj, and this is only achieved when people announce it publicly and the month is evident—even if it is neither a crescent nor a month.

The basis of this issue is that Allah, glorified and exalted, has made certain religious rulings dependent
