He also said—may Allah have mercy on him:

Section: Accepting without Asking

The Sahīh collection contains the following report about Hakīm ibn Hizām:

“After Hakīm had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) repeatedly, the Prophet said: ‘O Hakīm, this wealth is fresh and sweet. Whoever takes it without greed will be blessed in it, but whoever takes it with eager longing will not be blessed in it. He will be like someone who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand.’

Hakīm said: ‘I said, “O Messenger of Allah, by Him who sent you with the truth, I will take nothing from anyone after you until I leave this world.”’

Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would summon Hakīm to give him his stipend, but he would refuse to accept anything from him. Then Umar summoned him to give him his stipend, but he refused to accept it.

Umar said: ‘O Muslims’—or, in another version, ‘I call you to witness, O Muslims’—‘I am offering Hakīm his rightful share, which Allah has allotted him from this public revenue, but he refuses to take it.’ Thus Hakīm took nothing from anyone after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).”
