eagerly anticipates what he may be given, he should not accept it except where asking and such anticipation are permissible for him. But if it comes to him without his asking or eagerly anticipating it, he may accept it if the giver is giving him his due. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave Umar money from the public treasury: he had performed work, and the Prophet paid him for it.
He may also decline—as Hakīm ibn Hizām did—what he has no right to claim from the giver. If he accepts it without having eagerly looked to the giver for it, he has done well. As for someone who is wealthy, he should repay the giver financially for his kindness, in accordance with the report:
“Whoever does you a kindness, repay him. If you find nothing with which to repay him, then pray for him until you know that you have repaid him.”
