He was asked:
About someone who recites the Quran, wails at a grave, and says inappropriate things, while women have their faces uncovered and men are gathered around them.
He replied:
Praise be to Allah. Wailing is forbidden for both men and women according to the well-known imams. It is authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him:
“A woman who wails, if she does not repent before her death, will wear on the Day of Resurrection a coat of scabies and a garment of tar.”
The Sunan collections also report from him:
“He cursed the woman who wails and the woman who listens to her.”
It is also authentically reported that he said:
“He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks, tears open his neckline, and utters the cries of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.”
Women uncovering their faces where non-mahram men can see them is not permissible. Those in authority must enjoin what is right and forbid this and other wrongdoing. Anyone who does not desist must be punished in a manner that deters them. This applies especially to women’s wailing at graves, for this involves sins that Allah and His Messenger detest—such as impatience in grief
