“May whatever was taken from his lifespan be added to yours”—this is not recommended. Rather, one should offer a beneficial supplication for the bereaved, such as:

“May Allah increase your reward, grant you comfort in your loss, and forgive your deceased.”

As for the shortening and lengthening of lifespans, some people maintain that this cannot happen under any circumstances, interpreting the reports on this matter as referring to increased blessing. The correct view, however, is that a lifespan may be shortened or lengthened relative to what is recorded in the angels’ scrolls. Allah’s eternal knowledge, however, does not change.

As for the Preserved Tablet, there are two views on whether its contents may be changed. On this understanding, the scriptural texts concerning this subject are reconciled.

Preparing food for the family of the deceased is recommended, as the Prophet, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, said:

“Prepare food for Jaʿfar’s family, for something has befallen them that has occupied their attention.”

However, such food is lawful only when the giver offers it willingly and it is given in reciprocation, such as in return for a comparable kindness. If a person knows that it is not lawful, he must not eat any of it. If its status is uncertain, there is no harm in eating a little when doing so serves an overriding benefit, such as fostering affection between people or something similar. Allah knows best.
