disobeys will enter the Fire. This is the position that Abū al-Hasan al-Ash‘arī reported from Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamā‘ah.

Divinely imposed obligations cease only upon entering the abode of recompense—Paradise or the Fire. In the gathering grounds of the Resurrection, however, people will be tested, just as they are tested in the intermediate realm, where each is asked: “Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your prophet?”

Allah Most High says:

“On the Day when a shin is uncovered and they are called to prostrate, but will be unable to do so.”

“Their eyes downcast, humiliation will overwhelm them. They had been called to prostrate while they were sound.”

It is established through several authentic chains of transmission that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Allah will manifest Himself to His servants at the gathering place when it is said: ‘Let every people follow what they used to worship.’ The polytheists will follow their gods, while the believers will remain. The true Lord will manifest Himself to them in a form other than the one they recognize, and they will not acknowledge Him. Then He will manifest Himself to them in the form they recognize, and the believers will prostrate before Him. The hypocrites’ backs, however, will remain like cattle’s horns: they will wish to prostrate but will be unable to do so. This is what He says: ‘On the Day when a shin is uncovered’—the verse.”

These matters are discussed at length elsewhere.

The point here is that Allah does not torment anyone in the Hereafter except for their own sin, and that no bearer of burdens bears the burden of another. The Prophet’s statement:

“The deceased is tormented by his family’s weeping over him”

does not mean that the woman who wails goes unpunished. Rather, she is punished for her wailing, as stated in
