may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“Do not praise me excessively as the Christians praised the son of Mary. I am only a servant, so say: ‘Allah’s servant and His Messenger.’”

This issue is discussed at length elsewhere.

“Innovated grave visitation” is among the causes of associating partners with Allah Most High, invoking His creatures, and introducing a religion that Allah has not authorized. “Religiously sanctioned grave visitation,” by contrast, is a form of kindness to the deceased through supplication for them, just as offering the funeral prayer for them is a kindness. It is an act of worship devoted to Allah Most High through which He benefits both the supplicant and the person for whom supplication is made. Other examples include invoking blessings and peace upon the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asking Allah to grant him al-wasīlah, and supplicating for all believers, living and dead.

The disputed issue is this: does the permission to visit graves extend to women, thereby abrogating the prohibition applicable to them? Or were they not given permission, so that they remain forbidden to visit? And does the prohibition mean that it is unlawful or merely disliked?

Scholars hold three well-known positions on this matter. All three are found within the schools of al-Shāfi‘ī and Ahmad, as well as others. Three differing reports on this matter have been transmitted from Ahmad. This parallels their disagreement over women accompanying funeral processions, although some permit grave visitation but not accompanying funeral processions. This was the position chosen by a group of Ahmad’s followers and others.

Some scholars held that women were permitted to visit graves and that he had given permission
