Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked:

Regarding the words of Allah Most High:

“And that man will have nothing but what he strives for,”

and the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

“When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who supplicates for him.”

Does this imply that, after he dies, no benefit from acts of righteousness reaches him?

He answered:

Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. Neither the verse nor the hadith states that the deceased does not benefit from others’ supplications for him or from righteous deeds performed on his behalf. Rather, the leading scholars of Islam agree that the deceased benefits from these things. This is a matter necessarily known to be part of Islam, established by the Quran, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Whoever disputes this is among the people of religious innovation.

Allah Most High says:

“Those who bear the Throne and those around it glorify their Lord with praise, believe in Him, and seek forgiveness for those who believe: ‘Our Lord, You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow Your way, and protect them from the punishment of Hell.’”

“‘Our Lord, admit them to the Gardens of everlasting residence which You have promised them, along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. Indeed, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.’”

“‘And protect them
