Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Ahmad, Ibn Mājah and al-Tirmidhī.

‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Uthmān narrated:

“A physician mentioned a medicine in the presence of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and mentioned that a frog was included in it. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade killing frogs.”

Reported by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī.

‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd said concerning intoxication:

“Allah has not placed your cure in what He has forbidden you.”

Al-Bukhārī cited this in his Sahīh. Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān also narrated it in his Sahīh as a saying traced back to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. These texts and others like them explicitly prohibit treatment with unclean substances and expressly forbid treatment with wine, for it is the mother of all foul things and encompasses every sin.

The term khamr applies to every intoxicant, as established by reports from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Muslim narrated in his Sahīh, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Every intoxicant is khamr, and all khamr is forbidden.”

Another version reads:

“Every intoxicant is forbidden.”

In the two Sahīhs, Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī narrated:

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling concerning two drinks we used to make in Yemen: al-bit‘, made from honey left to ferment until it becomes strong, and al-mizr, made from sorghum and barley left to ferment until it becomes strong.’ The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had been endowed with concise, comprehensive speech, and he said, ‘Every intoxicant is forbidden.’”

Likewise, in the two Sahīhs, ‘Ā’ishah narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah
