It is also established in the Sahīh that he recited aloud during this prayer. The aim is for the prayer to continue throughout the eclipse until it clears. If one finishes praying before it clears, one should remember Allah and supplicate to Him until it clears. An eclipse may last longer or shorter depending on how much of the sun is obscured: all of it may be eclipsed, or half or a third. When the eclipse is extensive, one should prolong the prayer, reciting al-Baqarah or a similar surah in the first unit, and reciting a shorter passage after the second bowing.

Authentic hadiths from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, establish everything we have mentioned. Among them is the report in the two Sahīhs from Abū Mas'ūd al-Ansārī, who said:

“The sun was eclipsed on the day Ibrāhīm, the son of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died. People said, ‘The sun has been eclipsed because Ibrāhīm has died.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘The sun and the moon are two of Allah’s signs. They do not become eclipsed because of anyone’s death or life. When you see that, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and to prayer.’”

Also in the Sahīh, Abū Mūsā reported that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“These signs that Allah sends do not occur because of anyone’s death or life. Rather, Allah strikes fear into His servants through them. When you see any such thing, hasten to remember Him
