is better. Additional takbīr is also prescribed in the Eid sermon, beyond that of Friday sermons. According to our school and most scholars, takbīr is prescribed from the onset of Eid until its conclusion, when the prayer and sermon have ended. But should someone praying behind the imam cease the takbīr upon arriving at the prayer ground, since he is then occupied with awaiting the prayer? Or should he cease when the prayer begins, since he will then be occupied with the prayer and sermon? Or should he continue until the sermon ends? Differing views on this are reported from Ahmad and others. The correct view is that it continues until the conclusion of Eid.

Concerning Hajj, Allah Most High says:

“So that they may witness benefits for themselves and mention Allah’s name on appointed days for the livestock He has provided for them.”

One interpretation is that the appointed days are the days of sacrifice, and that mentioning Allah’s name means invoking His name over the Eid sacrifices and the sacrificial offerings brought for pilgrimage. This is Mālik’s view according to one report.

Another interpretation is that they are the ten days. This is the well-known view reported from Ahmad, as well as the view of al-Shāfiʿī and others. According to our school, mentioning Allah’s name during these days means remembering Him through takbīr throughout the ten days. Another view is that it means remembering Him upon seeing the sacrificial offerings; I believe this is reported from al-Shāfiʿī.

Sahīh al-Bukhārī relates that Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbās would go out to the marketplace during the ten days and proclaim Allah’s greatness, and the people would do likewise in response to their takbīr. An authentic hadith collection also relates from Anas that, on the morning of ʿArafah, as they travelled from Minā to ʿArafah, some would proclaim Allah’s greatness without anyone objecting, while others would recite the talbiyah (pilgrimage invocation) without anyone objecting.
