Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

and no fixed wording for this has been transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or the Companions. Allah knows best.

He was asked:

What is the wording of the takbīr on the two Eids, and when should it be said?

He replied:

Praise be to Allah.

The soundest view concerning takbīr, held by the majority of the early Muslims and jurists among the Companions and the leading scholars, is that it should be said after every prayer from dawn on the Day of ʿArafah until the last of the days of Tashrīq. It is also prescribed for everyone to proclaim the takbīr aloud when going out to the Eid prayer. This is agreed upon by the four imams.

The wording of the takbīr transmitted from most of the Companions, and also reported as traced back to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is:

“Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.”

If one says “Allah is greatest” three times, that is permissible. Some jurists say “Allah is greatest” three times only; others say it three times and then add:

“There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.”

As for the takbīrs within the prayer, the person praying behind the imam follows him in saying them. Most of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and the leading scholars say seven takbīrs in the first rakʿah and five in the second.
