He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked about a sermon between two prayers, each obligatory at its appointed time, at a time whose precise identity is unclear, and about the conditions applicable to it, as with other religious observances: the noon prayer and the Sunnah prayers, the appointed time and the direction of prayer, and likewise the call to prayer.

He replied:

Praise be to Allah.

This question may refer to several situations, some agreed upon and others disputed.

One is when Eid and Friday coincide. Whoever holds that the Eid prayer is obligatory would say that the Friday sermon is a sermon between two prayers, both obligatory, unlike the Eid sermon, which he does not regard as obligatory.

Alternatively, it may refer to two Friday prayers held in a place where two Friday prayers cannot both be valid. The first is valid and the second invalid if both were authorized by the imam. If it is unclear which took place first, both are invalid, and they offer the noon prayer instead.
