Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him—was also asked:
Regarding prayer after the first call to prayer on Friday: did the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), or any of the Companions, Successors, or imams, perform it? Is it explicitly prescribed in any of the schools of the universally recognized imams? And is the Prophet’s saying (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), “Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer,” specific to Friday, or does it apply at all times?
He replied—may Allah be pleased with him:
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) did not offer any prayer before the Friday prayer after the call to prayer, nor has anyone reported that he did so. During his lifetime, the call to prayer was not given until he had sat down on the pulpit. Bilāl would give the call, then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would deliver the two sermons. Bilāl would then give the call to commence the prayer, and the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would lead the people in prayer. Thus, neither he nor any of the Muslims praying with him could have offered a prayer after the call to prayer. Nor has anyone reported that he prayed at home before going out on Friday, nor did he verbally prescribe a prayer
