was from Khuzāʿah, whose people lived around Mecca. In the two Sahīh collections, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd reported:

“ʿUthmān led us in four rakʿahs at Minā. When ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd was told of this, he said, ‘To Allah we belong, and to Him we return,’ then said: ‘I prayed two rakʿahs with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at Minā; I prayed two rakʿahs with Abū Bakr at Minā; and I prayed two rakʿahs with ʿUmar at Minā. Would that, of these four rakʿahs, my share were two accepted rakʿahs!’”

It has been said that ʿUthmān, may Allah be pleased with him, offered the prayer in full because he had married in Mecca and thus become a resident. In the Musnad, ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Dhubāb reported:

“ʿUthmān prayed four rakʿahs at Minā, and the people objected. He said: ‘People, I have married in Mecca since my arrival, and I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Whoever marries in a town should offer the prayer of a resident in Mecca for three days and shorten the fourth.”’”

He should indeed shorten his prayers, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did, and he cannot remain there longer than that. For ʿUthmān was one of the Emigrants, and they were forbidden to reside in Mecca.

In the two Sahīh collections, it is reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted an Emigrant to stay in Mecca for three days after completing his pilgrimage rites. Whenever ʿUthmān performed ʿumrah, he would order his mount to be prepared and ride away immediately afterward, so that he would not remain in Mecca.
