and it comes from the books of ‘Abd al-Razzāq.

‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who said: “Husayn ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abbās narrated to me, from ‘Ikrimah and from Kurayb, from Ibn ‘Abbās, that Ibn ‘Abbās said: ‘Shall I tell you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, while travelling?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said:

‘When the sun passed its zenith while he was at his stopping place, he would combine Zuhr and ‘Asr before mounting. If it had not passed its zenith while he was at his stopping place, he would travel until ‘Asr became due, then stop and combine Zuhr and ‘Asr. When Maghrib became due while he was at his stopping place, he would combine it with ‘Ishā’. If it had not become due while he was at his stopping place, he would mount and travel until ‘Ishā’ became due, then stop and combine the two.’”

Al-Dāraqutnī said: “‘Abd al-Majīd ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah, from Husayn, from Kurayb.” It is therefore possible that Ibn Jurayj first heard it from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah, from Husayn, as ‘Abd al-Majīd reported from him, and that Ibn Jurayj subsequently met Husayn and heard it directly from him, as ‘Abd al-Razzāq and Hajjāj reported from Ibn Jurayj.

Al-Bayhaqī said: “It was also narrated through Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlān, Yazīd ibn al-Hādī and Abū Ruways al-Madanī, from Husayn ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbās.” The corroborating reports already mentioned strengthen it.

He also cited the hadith that al-Bukhārī mentioned without a full chain of transmission: the report of Ibrāhīm ibn Tahmān, from al-Husayn, from Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbās:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would combine Zuhr and ‘Asr while travelling when he was on the road, and he would combine Maghrib and ‘Ishā’.”
