Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

‘I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, pray as I have just prayed when he needed to press on with his journey’—meaning that he combined the two prayers after night had fallen.”

As for the hadith of Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, it was related with a chain through al-Shāfi‘ī and Abū Nu‘aym, from Ibn ‘Uyaynah, from Abū Najīh, from Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Dhu’ayb, who said:

“I accompanied Ibn ‘Umar. When the sun set, we were too apprehensive to tell him to rise for prayer. When the whiteness along the horizon and the early darkness of night had passed, he dismounted and prayed three units of prayer, followed by two. Then he turned to us and said: ‘This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, act.’”

As for the hadith of Anas, it appears in the two Sahīhs, from Ibn Shihāb, from Anas, who said:

“When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, set out before the sun had passed its zenith, he would delay Zuhr until the time of ‘Asr, then dismount and combine the two prayers. If the sun had passed its zenith before he set out, he would pray Zuhr and then mount.”

This is the wording describing his practice, transmitted by ‘Aqīl from him. Muslim also narrated it through Ibn Wahb, who said: Jābir ibn Ismā‘īl narrated to me, from ‘Aqīl, from Ibn Shihāb, from Anas, who reported concerning the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“When he needed to press on with his journey, he would delay Zuhr until the time of ‘Asr and combine them. He would also delay Maghrib so as to combine it with ‘Ishā’ when the twilight disappeared.”

Muslim also narrated it through Shabābah: al-Layth ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from ‘Aqīl, from Ibn Shihāb, from Anas, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
