As for reciting behind the imam, people hold two extreme positions and a middle one.
Some regard reciting behind the imam as disliked, with some going so far as to deem it forbidden, whether in prayers recited silently or aloud. This is the predominant view among the scholars of Kūfah and their followers, such as the followers of Abū Hanīfah.
Others strongly emphasize reciting behind the imam, even requiring the recitation of al-Fātihah when one can hear the imam reciting. This is the later of al-Shāfi'ī’s two positions, also held by a group of other scholars.
Others instruct worshippers to recite in prayers recited silently and during the imam’s pauses in prayers recited aloud, and likewise instruct those too far away to hear the imam to recite. As for those close enough to hear the imam’s recitation, they instruct them to listen attentively to it, treating listening as taking the place of reciting.
This is the view of the majority, including Mālik, Ahmad, and others
