Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“The imam has only been appointed to be followed. When he pronounces the takbīr, pronounce the takbīr, and when he recites, listen silently.”

Narrated by Imam Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Nasā’ī.

Muslim ibn al-Hajjāj was asked, “Is Abū Hurayrah’s hadith authentic?”—meaning the wording, “When he recites, listen silently.” He replied, “I consider it authentic.” He was asked, “Why do you not include it here?”—meaning in his book. He replied, “I have not included here everything I consider authentic. I have included here only what they agreed upon.” This means that they did not agree upon the version transmitted through Abū Hurayrah, whereas they agreed upon the version narrated by Abū Mūsā. Muslim narrated it through Abū Mūsā, but did not narrate it through Abū Hurayrah.

Ibn Ukaymah al-Laythī narrated from Abū Hurayrah:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, finished a prayer in which he had recited aloud and asked, ‘Did anyone’—meaning one of us—‘recite just now?’ A man replied, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘I find myself asking: Why is someone competing with me in reciting the Quran?’”

After hearing this from him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the people stopped reciting along with him in those prayers in which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited aloud. Narrated by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, al-Nasā’ī, and al-Tirmidhī, who said, “It is a good hadith.”

Abū Dāwūd said: “I heard Muhammad ibn Yahyā ibn Fāris say that the words, ‘The people stopped reciting,’ through to the end, are the words of al-Zuhrī.” Al-Bukhārī also related something to this effect.

Al-Bayhaqī said: “Ibn Ukaymah is an unknown narrator who narrated no hadith other than this one
