Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the Quran. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous in Ramadan, when Gabriel would meet him and review the Quran with him.”

He was asked about the sunnah prayer associated with ʿAsr:

“Has any hadith concerning it been reported from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace? Which of the differing views concerning it is correct?”

He answered:

Praise be to Allah. What is authentically reported from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar:

“I learned from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—the following ten rakʿahs: two before Zuhr and two after it, two after Maghrib, two after ʿIshāʾ, and two before Fajr.”

It is also reported in the Sahīh that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“Whoever offers twelve voluntary rakʿahs in a day and a night, Allah will build him a house in Paradise.”

The Sunan collections explain these as:

“Four before Zuhr and two after it, two after Maghrib, two after ʿIshāʾ, and two before Fajr.”

It is also authentically reported from him in the Sahīh that he said:

“Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer. Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer. Between every two calls to prayer there is a prayer.” Then, on the third occasion, he added: “For whoever wishes,” lest people adopt it as a sunnah. This hadith thus indicates that one may pray
