The reports from Ahmad differ as to whether one should also make up the even-numbered prayer accompanying witr. The correct view is that one should make it up as well.
It is authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it should pray it when he remembers it, for that is its appointed time.”
This encompasses obligatory prayers, night prayers, witr, and the regular Sunnah prayers.
‘Ā’ishah said:
“When sleep or illness prevented the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from praying at night, he would pray twelve rak‘ahs during the day.”
Narrated by Muslim.
‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb narrated that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Whoever sleeps through his regular portion of nighttime recitation, or any part of it, then recites it between the Fajr and Zuhr prayers, will have it recorded for him as though he had recited it at night.”
Narrated by Muslim. The same applies to the regular Sunnah prayers. It is authentically reported of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“When he and his Companions slept through the Fajr prayer while travelling, he prayed the two-rak‘ah Sunnah prayer of Fajr, then prayed Fajr after sunrise.”
“When he missed the Sunnah prayer that follows Zuhr, he prayed it after ‘Asr.”
‘Ā’ishah said:
“When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not pray four rak‘ahs before Zuhr, he would pray them afterwards.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhī.
Abū Hurayrah narrated that he said:
“Whoever has not prayed the two rak‘ahs of Fajr should pray them after sunrise.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhī and graded authentic by Ibn Khuzaymah.
