He was asked:
“If a man is travelling and shortening his prayers, must he pray witr or not? Please give us a ruling; may you be rewarded.”
He replied:
Yes, he should perform witr while travelling, for:
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to perform witr both while travelling and at home.”
He would pray on his mount, whichever direction it took him, and perform witr on it, but he would not perform the obligatory prayer on it.
He was asked:
“What should someone do if he sleeps through the witr prayer?”
He replied:
He should pray it between dawn and the Fajr prayer, as ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, ‘Ā’ishah, and others did.
Abū Dāwūd narrated in his Sunan that Abū Sa‘īd said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Whoever sleeps through witr or forgets it, let him pray it when morning comes or when he remembers.”
