And Allah Most High says:

“Is one who is devoutly obedient during the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for his Lord’s mercy, [like one who is not]? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only people of understanding take heed.”

Allah Most High also says:

“Among the People of the Book is an upright community who recite Allah’s verses during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves.”

After saying:

“Establish prayer from the sun’s decline until the darkness of the night, and the recitation at dawn. Indeed, the recitation at dawn is witnessed,”

Allah Most High says:

“And during part of the night, rise to pray with it as an additional act of worship for you; perhaps your Lord will raise you to a station of praise.”

And He says in Sūrat al-Muzzammil:

“Stand in prayer at night, except for a little,”

through to His words:

“Indeed, rising at night makes a deeper impression and is more conducive to sound recitation.”

When the obligation was abrogated, the recommendation remained. Ahmad and others said: “Nāshi’ah (rising at night) occurs only after sleep; one says nasha’a when someone rises.”

Allah Most High says:

“The servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk humbly upon the earth, and when the ignorant address them, they respond with words of peace.”

“And those who spend the night before their Lord, prostrating and standing in prayer.”

And His words, Most High:

“Indeed, it is We who have sent down the Quran to you, progressively.”

“So be patient with your Lord’s decree, and do not obey any sinner or ungrateful disbeliever among them.”

“And remember the name of your Lord morning and evening.”

“And during part of the night, prostrate yourself before Him, and glorify Him through the long night.”

This includes the ‘Ishā’ prayer, witr, and night prayer, because He says:

“And glorify Him through the long night.”

And His words, Most High:

“We certainly know that your heart is distressed by what they say.”
