Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The eleventh argument:

The places where one prostrates are called masājid (places of prostration). As Allah Most High says:

“And the mosques are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone along with Allah.”

He also says:

“And who is more unjust than one who prevents Allah’s name from being mentioned in His mosques?”

And:

“It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah.”

And:

“Say, ‘My Lord has commanded justice. Direct your faces toward Him at every place of prayer.’”

They are not called maqāmāt (places of standing) unless prostration has been performed in them. This shows that the greatest act of prayer is prostration, for He designated the places of prostration by reference to the act performed there.

The twelfth argument:

Allah Most High says:

“Only those believe in Our verses who, when reminded of them, fall down in prostration and glorify their Lord with praise, and are not arrogant.”

Although this includes the prostration of recitation, it applies even more strongly to prostration in prayer, for a person’s need for this prostration is greater in every circumstance. He has thus made falling down in prostration something without which faith cannot be attained, and has singled it out for mention. This is one of its distinguishing merits. Likewise, He says of His prophets:

“When the verses of the Most Merciful are recited to them, they fall down in prostration and weeping.”

He also says in that verse:

“Their sides forsake their beds as they call upon their Lord in fear and hope.”

Supplication during prostration is better than supplication in other postures, as established in authentic hadiths, such as his saying in the hadith of Abū Hurayrah:

“The closest a servant comes to his Lord is while prostrating, so supplicate abundantly.”

And likewise what Muslim narrated in his Sahīh from
