Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He—may Allah have mercy on him—was also asked:

An imam stood up for a fifth rak‘ah. The congregation alerted him by saying “Glory be to Allah,” but he paid no heed to what they said, thinking he had made no mistake. Should they stand up with him or not?

He replied:

If they stand up with him out of ignorance, their prayer is not invalidated. But if they do so knowingly, they should not follow him. Rather, they should wait until he pronounces the salām with them, or pronounce the salām before him. Waiting is better. And Allah knows best.
