Muslims did not learn of the obligation until some time later. Another example of an abrogated ruling is that a number of leading Companions did not perform ritual bathing after intercourse without ejaculation. Rather, they held that ritual bathing was required only after ejaculation, until its abrogation was established for them. For some, its abrogation was never established. They would therefore pray without the purification required by Islamic law, being unaware of its obligation; one of them would pray while in a state of major ritual impurity.

If someone forgets the prostrations of forgetfulness until he has done something incompatible with prayer, such as speaking:

It is established in the two Sahīh collections, on the authority of Ibn Mas‘ūd, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “prostrated after the salām and after speaking.” The account in the two Sahīh collections explains this:

“He led them in the noon prayer, praying five units. When he turned away, the people began murmuring among themselves. He asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, has anything been added to the prayer?’ He replied, ‘No.’ They said, ‘But you prayed five units.’ He then turned back, performed two prostrations, and concluded with the salām.”

This is the view of the majority of scholars, and it is the position of Mālik, al-Shāfi‘ī, Ahmad and others. It is reported from Abū Hanīfa that if someone speaks after the salām, the obligation to perform the prostrations of forgetfulness lapses, because speech is incompatible with prayer, just like the occurrence of ritual impurity. It is reported from al-Hasan and Muhammad that if he turns his face away from
