As for the prescribed length of prayer when leading others, the model is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, Abū Qilābah reports from Mālik ibn al-Huwayrith:
“When the time for prayer comes, let one of you give the call to prayer, and let the eldest of you lead you. Then pray as you have seen me pray.”
As for standing, Sahīh Muslim contains the report of Jābir ibn Samurah:
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would recite ‘Qāf. By the glorious Quran’ and similar surahs in the dawn prayer, and his subsequent prayers were shorter.”
That is, he would make the prayers following the dawn prayer brief. As also reported from him in Sahīh Muslim:
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would recite ‘By the night when it covers’ in the noon prayer, a similar amount in the afternoon prayer, and more than that in the dawn prayer.”
In the two Sahīhs, Abū Barzah al-Aslamī said:
“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would perform the midday prayer—which you call the first prayer—as soon as the sun passed its zenith. He would perform the afternoon prayer, after which one of us could return to his dwelling at the farthest end of Medina while the sun was still bright—the narrator said, ‘I have forgotten what he said about the sunset prayer’—and he preferred to delay the night prayer, which you call the nightfall prayer.
