Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

part of the prayer. This entails the obligation to remain still when bowing, prostrating, standing after bowing, and sitting between prostrations. This makes clear that stillness is prescribed in all the actions of prayer as far as possible. Thus, one maintains composure even during its transitions, which culminate in movement; stillness in these consists of moving at a measured rather than a rapid pace, as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed when walking to prayer. If this applies to movement towards prayer, how much more so to movement within it? He said:

“When you come to prayer, do not come rushing. Come with tranquility. Pray whatever you catch, and make up whatever you miss.”

This also constitutes independent evidence on the issue. Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:

“When the call to commence prayer is given, do not come rushing. Come walking, with tranquility. Pray whatever you catch, and make up whatever you miss.”

This was narrated by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah. Abū Dāwūd said—and al-Tirmidhī said likewise—that Ibn Abī Dhi’b, Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘d, Ma‘mar, and Shu‘ayb ibn Abī Hamzah narrated from al-Zuhrī the wording:

“And complete whatever you miss.”

Ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated from al-Zuhrī the wording, “Make it up.” Muhammad ibn ‘Amr, reporting from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, and Ja‘far ibn Abī Rabī‘ah, reporting from al-A‘raj, from Abū Hurayrah, related the wording, “Complete it.” Ibn Mas‘ūd also related from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the wording, “Complete it.” Abū Dāwūd narrated from Abū
