on the Day when the Caller summons to something dreadful. With their eyes humbled, they will emerge from their graves like scattered locusts, rushing toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, ‘This is a difficult Day.’”
And His words, Most High:
“On the Day when they will emerge from their graves swiftly, as though rushing toward an idol, their eyes humbled, overwhelmed by humiliation. That is the Day they were promised.”
In the other reading: “Khushshaʿan absāruhum (their eyes humbled).”
In these two passages, He describes their bodies as moving swiftly, while describing only their eyes as humbled. This contrasts with the verse about prayer, in which He describes those praying as humbly devout in their whole being, saying:
“Those who are humbly devout in their prayers.”
And His words, Most High:
“Indeed, it is burdensome except for the humbly devout.”
Allah Most High also says:
“On the Day when a shin will be laid bare and they will be called to prostrate but will be unable to do so, their eyes humbled, overwhelmed by humiliation.”
Another example is the humbling of voices, as in His words, Most High:
“And voices will be hushed before the Most Merciful.”
This means that they will become low and fall silent.
Allah Most High says:
“And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying, ‘Is there any way back?’ And you will see them brought before it, humbled by disgrace, looking with furtive glances.”
Allah Most High also says:
“Some faces that Day will be humbled, labouring and exhausted, entering a scorching Fire, given drink from a boiling spring.”
This will occur on the Day of Resurrection. This is undoubtedly the correct one of the two views.
