after turning away, just as someone addressing a king or anyone else is better placed to make a request while still speaking to him than after turning away.
He was asked:
Is the supplication that people offer after every prayer disliked? Has this practice been reported from any of the early generations? They also neglect the remembrance authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and occupy themselves with supplication. Is it better to occupy oneself with the remembrance reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or with this supplication? Is it authentically established that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would raise his hands and wipe his face, or not?
He answered:
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. What has been transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning this after the obligatory prayer is only the well-known remembrance, such as the formulas found in the collections of authentic hadith, the Sunan and Musnad collections, and elsewhere. For example, an authentic hadith states that before departing from the prayer, he would seek forgiveness three times, then say:
“O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.”
Another authentic hadith states that after every obligatory prayer he would say:
“There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.
