and innovation. The prophetic supplications and forms of remembrance are the best that anyone seeking to remember Allah and supplicate to Him can pursue. Whoever follows them travels a safe and secure path. No tongue can express, nor any person fully comprehend, the benefits and results they yield. Other forms of remembrance may be forbidden or disliked, and may contain associations of partners with Allah that most people fail to recognize. These are matters whose detailed explanation would be lengthy.
No one may institute for people a form of remembrance or supplication not prescribed in the Sunnah and make it a regular act of worship that they observe as consistently as the five daily prayers. Rather, this is inventing a religion for which Allah has given no permission. This differs from supplications that a person offers occasionally without establishing them as a customary practice for others. If such a supplication is not known to contain a forbidden meaning, it may not be categorically declared forbidden. Nevertheless, it may contain such a meaning without the person realizing it. Similarly, in times of urgent need, a person may offer supplications that he is inspired to utter at that moment. Such cases are relatively straightforward.
As for adopting an unprescribed regular litany and establishing an unprescribed form of remembrance as a customary practice, these are practices that are prohibited. Moreover, prescribed supplications and forms of remembrance encompass the fullest realization of sound aspirations and the loftiest aims. No one turns away from them to newly introduced, innovated forms of remembrance except someone who is ignorant, negligent, or transgressing the bounds.
