He was asked:
“Regarding a group of people who glorify Allah, praise Him, and proclaim His greatness: is this sunnah or disliked? Sometimes someone in the group causes hardship by prolonging it unnecessarily.”
He replied:
Glorifying Allah and proclaiming His greatness after prayer is recommended, not obligatory. Anyone who wishes to get up before doing so may do so and should not be reproached. Nor should someone who wishes to perform this recommended act abandon it. However, a person praying behind the imam should not get up until the imam turns away—that is, turns away from the direction of prayer. After the salutation, the imam should remain seated facing the direction of prayer only long enough to seek forgiveness three times and say:
“O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of majesty and honour.”
Once the imam has turned away, whoever wishes to get up may do so, and whoever wishes to remain seated remembering Allah may do so.
