Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The first:

“One says ‘Glory be to Allah’ thirty-three times, ‘Praise be to Allah’ thirty-three times, and ‘Allah is the Greatest’ thirty-three times. That makes ninety-nine, and one completes the hundred by saying: ‘There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion, and His is all praise, and He has power over all things.’”

Muslim narrated this in his Sahīh.

The second: One recites these formulas twenty-five times each, adding “There is no god worthy of worship except Allah.” Muslim also narrated this.

The third: One recites the three formulas thirty-three times. This has two forms: the first is to recite each formula thirty-three times; the second is to recite each formula eleven times. The count of thirty-three is mentioned in the hadith reported in both Sahīh collections.

The fifth: One says “Allah is the Greatest” thirty-four times to complete a hundred.

The sixth: One recites each of the three formulas ten times.

This, then, is the established practice of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. This is fitting, because the person praying is conversing privately with his Lord. It is therefore more fitting for him to supplicate to Him and ask of Him while conversing privately with Him than to ask of Him and supplicate to Him after turning away from Him.
