one’s voice when doing so. Whoever advocates this is mistaken and opposes the position of the Muslim scholars.
As for invoking blessings or Allah’s good pleasure aloud, as some muezzins do before certain preachers during Friday prayers, this is disliked or forbidden by agreement of the Muslim community. Some scholars, however, say that one should invoke blessings upon him quietly, while others say that one should remain silent. And Allah knows best.
He was asked about someone who says:
“O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and the family of Muhammad until none of Your blessings remain. Bestow Your blessing upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad until none of Your blessings remain. Have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad until none of Your mercy remains. Grant peace to Muhammad and the family of Muhammad until none of Your peace remains.”
Please give us a ruling; may you be rewarded.
He answered:
All praise is due to Allah. This supplication has not been transmitted from any of the early generations.
As for the words, “until none of Your blessings remain, and none of Your mercy remains”: if the speaker means that what Allah possesses of these should be exhausted, then he is ignorant, for the goodness that Allah possesses is inexhaustible. If he means that, through his supplication, he is giving him everything he could possibly be given, this too is ignorance, for his supplication is not what makes that possible.
