As for the basmalah (“In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful”):

There is no doubt that some Companions recited it aloud, while others did not, either reciting it silently or not reciting it at all. Most of those who recited it aloud would do so on some occasions and recite it silently on others. This is because a remembrance that the Sunnah prescribes reciting silently may nevertheless be recited aloud for an overriding benefit, such as teaching those praying behind the imam. An authentic report establishes that Ibn ʿAbbās recited al-Fātihah aloud in the funeral prayer to teach them that reciting it is Sunnah.

Scholars have differed over Quran recitation in the funeral prayer, holding three views:

One view is that it is not recommended under any circumstances. This is the position of Abū Hanīfah and Mālik.

Another is that reciting al-Fātihah in it is obligatory, as maintained by some followers of al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad.

A third is that reciting al-Fātihah in it is recommended, but if a person does not recite and instead merely supplicates, that is permissible. This is the correct view.

An authentic report also establishes that ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb would say:

“Allah is the Greatest. Glory and praise be to You, O Allah. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no deity but You.”

He recited this aloud on many occasions. Scholars agree that reciting it aloud is not a regular Sunnah practice; rather, he did so to teach others. For the same reason, it is reported that one of the Companions used to
