his own desires? Will you then be his guardian?”
“Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like cattle—rather, they are even further astray.”
And He Most High says:
“But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in their disputes, then find within themselves no unease concerning your judgment and submit wholeheartedly.”
It has been reported that he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“By Him in whose hand is my soul, none of you truly believes until his desires accord with what I have brought.”
He Most High says:
“Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you? They wish to seek judgment from false authorities, although they were commanded to reject them. Satan wishes to lead them far astray.”
“When they are told, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turn away from you in aversion.”
And He Most High says:
“Or do they have partners who have prescribed for them a religion that Allah has not authorized?”
And He Most High says:
“Alif Lām Mīm Sād.”
“A Book has been sent down to you—so let there be no unease in your heart concerning it—that you may warn by it, and as a reminder to the believers.”
“Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow any protectors besides Him. How little you take heed!”
And He Most High says:
“If the truth were to follow their desires, the heavens and the earth and all those within them would surely fall into ruin.”
There are many similar passages in the Quran. It is thus clear that a servant must follow the truth with which Allah sent His Messenger, and must not make his religion conform to his desires. And Allah knows best.
