As for your statement that I seek to have judgment entrusted to a particular individual:
“This is not appropriate. Rather, it would harm both that individual and me, and cause widespread damage. You know, concerning Judge” Badr al-Dīn, “that I have been among those most loyal to him, supporting and assisting him and defending him against his enemies in numerous matters. Indeed, I know of no one more sincere in his friendship with him or more helpful to him. This has been for Allah alone, not out of any hope of gain or fear on my part.
“A substantial part of the harm I have suffered—in Damascus and in Egypt as well—has been solely because I defended him and his deputies, such as al-Zur‘ī, al-Tabrīzī and others in his circle, and spoke highly of his merits in Egypt as well. I have become known for this, and the party of perdition and others oppose me on that account.
“Allah knows that no one else comes close to the esteem in which I hold him or the place he has in my heart, let alone equals him. Allah forbid that Badr al-Dīn should be equated with someone from whom Allah has distinguished him in so many ways. In the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd, it is reported:
“‘Ā’ishah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah commanded us to accord people their proper standing.’”
