covering and concealment sufficient to fulfill their purpose, the fundamental principle governing this matter becomes clear: a woman is forbidden to wear clothing predominantly worn by men, even if it provides adequate covering, such as the farājī garments customarily worn exclusively by men in certain lands. The prohibition of such clothing varies as customs change. As for distinctions relating to the covering itself, women are instructed to wear what provides greater covering, even supposing that the sexes could be distinguished without it. Thus, when clothing combines insufficient covering with imitation of the other sex, it is forbidden on both grounds. And Allah knows best.

He was asked:

Are these turbans that women wear on their heads forbidden or disliked? What turbans are recommended for women? And may they wear leather socks?

He answered:

Praise be to Allah alone.

These turbans worn by women are undoubtedly forbidden. It is authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Two groups from my community will be among the people of the Fire, whom I have not yet seen: women who are clothed yet naked, going astray and leading others astray, with something on their heads resembling the humps of Khurasanian camels. They will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance. And men carrying whips like cattle’s tails, with which they beat Allah’s servants.”
