silk to a man who will wear it and to whom the prohibition applies. Selling silk to women, however, is permissible, as is selling it to a disbeliever, for:

“ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb sent silk that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had given him to a polytheist.”

He was asked:

“Is it disliked to drape a coat over one’s shoulders without putting one’s arms through its sleeves?”

He replied:

“There is nothing wrong with this, by agreement of the jurists, who have explicitly stated that it is permissible. This is not the disliked form of draping garments, because this manner of dress is not that of the Jews.”

He was asked:

“Is it permissible for trousers to extend below the ankles?”

He replied:

“If a shirt, trousers, or any other garment is overlong, one may not let it extend below the ankles, as established hadiths from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, indicate. He said:

‘Letting garments hang below the ankles applies to trousers, waist wrappers, and shirts.’

That is, he forbade letting them hang below the ankles.”
