and wearing silk is forbidden to men by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the consensus of the scholars, even if it is lined with cotton or linen. As for women, these hoods are forbidden because they are men’s clothing, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women.

As for boys who have not reached puberty wearing silk, scholars hold two well-known views. The stronger view, however, is that it is not permissible. Whatever a man is forbidden to do himself, he is also forbidden to allow a young child to do. He must instruct the child to pray when he reaches seven and strike him for neglecting it when he reaches ten. How, then, could it be lawful for him to dress the child in forbidden garments?

When ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb saw a son of al-Zubayr wearing a silk garment, he tore it and said:

“Do not dress them in silk.”

Likewise, Ibn Masʿūd tore a silk garment that his son was wearing. Whatever is forbidden to wear is also unlawful to make or sell to someone who will wear it and to whom the prohibition applies. There is no distinction in this regard between soldiers and others. A man may not earn a living by sewing silk garments for someone who is forbidden to wear them, for that is assisting in sin and transgression, just like assisting in acts of indecency and the like. Likewise, it is not permissible to sell
