fine clothing to display Allah’s blessing and to help him obey Allah is rewarded. Whoever wears it out of pride and arrogance is sinful, for Allah does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful.
For this reason, He prohibited letting one’s garment trail with this intention. It is related in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abū Bakr said, “O Messenger of Allah, the edge of my lower garment slips down unless I keep attending to it.” He replied, “O Abū Bakr, you are not among those who do so out of arrogance.”
It is also related in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“While a man was dragging his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah caused the earth to swallow him, and he will continue sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection.”
These matters and others like them vary according to people’s knowledge and beliefs. The servant is commanded to say in every prayer:
“Guide us to the straight path,”
“the path of those You have blessed, not those who have incurred Your anger, nor those who have gone astray.”
And Allah, glorified and exalted be He, knows best.
He was asked about pure silk:
May a tailor sew it for men? Are his earnings from this unlawful? Should he be censured for doing so? Is it permissible to sew fabrics other than silk using silk thread? May he sew silk garments for women?
