In Sahīh al-Bukhārī, it is reported:
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw a man standing in the sun. He asked, ‘What is he doing?’ They replied, ‘This is Abū Isrā’īl. He has vowed to remain standing, not to seek shade or speak, and to fast.’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Tell him to seek shade, speak, sit down, and complete his fast.’”
Allah Most High says:
“O you who believe, eat of the good things We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him that you worship.”
He thus commanded people to eat good things and give thanks to Him. What is good is what benefits a person, while He has forbidden foul things, which are those that harm him. He commanded gratitude to Him, which consists in obeying Him by doing what He has commanded and avoiding what He has forbidden.
In Sahīh Muslim, it is reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Allah is indeed pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and takes a drink and praises Him for it.”
Allah Most High says:
“Eat of the good things and do righteous deeds.”
Whoever eats good things but neither gives thanks nor does righteous deeds is subject to punishment for the obligations he has neglected, and those good things are not lawful for him. Allah has made them lawful only for those who use them to help them obey Him, not for those who use them to help them disobey Him. As Allah Most High says:
“There is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed, provided they fear Allah, believe, and do righteous deeds, then fear Allah and believe, then fear Allah and do good. And Allah loves those who do good.”
And Abraham, Allah’s intimate friend, said:
